Research shows teenagers are 33% less likely to drink alcohol if their families eat dinner together five or more times per week.

What else can parents do to prevent underage drinking?

First, parents need to realize they are the number one influence on their teenager.  Utah teens said so themselves.

Then they can apply three skills that are proven to prevent underage drinking.

1. Bonding:  Bonding is a feeling of being loved and accepted by others.  Children who feel close to their parents are less likely to drink.  To increase bonding with your teenager, apply the following ideas.

  • Create a positive, loving home environment
  • Have daily positive interaction
  • Notice your child's emotional well-being

2. Boundaries: Boundaries are the rules and expectations set by parents that define what they expect of their children.  Parents need to set clear rules and expectations about no underage drinking.  Follow these simple guidelines.

  • Teach the risks of underage drinking
  • Be clear when setting rules and expectations
  • Help your children choose friends wisely

3. Monitoring: Monitoring is knowing where your kids are, who they are with, and what they are doing.  To improve your monitoring skills, apply the following steps.

  • Know your child's activities
  • Ensure an alcohol-free environment
  • Maintain monitoring even when they may be home alone
