cigarette-close-up.jpgThe Bear River Health Departments (BRHD) Tobacco Prevention, Cessation, and Control Program uses comprehensive strategies to reduce tobacco use and tobacco related disease and death.

Smoking Rates and Health Consequences

 Adult Tobacco Use

  • Since the late 1990's, the estimated age-adjusted smoking rate in Bear River Health District has decreased by 44%.  At 5.3% BRHD's 2010 age adjusted adult smoking rate is at it's lowest recorded level.
  • Smoking disproportionately impacts Utahans with lower incomes.  In 2010, 16% of Utah adults with a household income of less than $25,000 reported current smoking.

Youth Tobacco Use

  • The percentage of high school students who reported current smoking was 4.9% in the BRHD.  This is lower than the state rate of 6.4%.
  • During 2011, 6.1% of tobacco outlets in BRHD sold tobacco to underage youth during compliance checks.
