multiple-rx-bottles.jpgEvery community citizen has a role to play in proper disposal of prescription drugs and preventing prescription drug abuse. The following are suggestions on how to take an active role in these efforts:

1. Clean Out Your Cabinet
  • Do you have expired over the counter products?
  • Do you have out dated prescription medications?
  • Do you have prescriptions that you no longer use?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time to clean our your medicine cabinet.

2. Dispose of Prescription Drugs Safely

For safe disposal at home:

  •     Remove the prescription label
  •     Crush up the pills
  •     Mix with undesirables such as kitty litter or coffee grounds
  •     Seal in a plastic bag
  •     Take out on the day trash is picked up
  •     DO NOT flush medications unless other wise directed.  This may pollute the water supply.

Prescription Drop-Off Boxes: Use prescription drop off sites in your community to dispose of medications.

3. Ask Your Doctor for Information On Prescriptions You or Your Family Is Taking

  •     Ask your physicians questions about the prescribed medications
  •     Use one pharmacist to fill family prescriptions and ask questions when the  prescriptions are filled.

4. Monitor Quantities and Control Access of Current Prescriptions.

  • Take note of how many pills are in a bottle or pill packet, and keep track of refills.
  •  Store current prescriptions in a secure location.
    •  5. Dispose of Sharps safely.

      • Households needing to dispose of sharps can do so by  placing them in a rigid plastic container such as a two liter soda bottle or milk jug.  Clearly label the container as a biohazard or sharps and place the container in your regular black garbage can.
