National Safe Kids Week
playsafelogo.jpgNational Safe Kids Week is April 28th to May 5th, 2008.  To celebrate this week of injury prevention and education, a new report tracking the accidental childhood injury death rate in the United States since 1987 will be unveiled.  Some of the report’s startling statistics demonstrate that in 2005 accidental injury claimed the lives of 5,162 children, ages 14 and under and in 2006 there were more than 6.2 million children’s emergency room visits for accidental injuries in this group.  Safe Kids Bear River will also be hosting the “Gear Up Games” at the Boys and Girls Clubs in both Box Elder and Cache Counties.

The “Gear Up Games” are targeted to children ages 10-13 to help them prevent accidental injury to themselves and others.  There will be five different safety stations representing the five risk areas (motor vehicle, pedestrian safety, wheeled sports safety, fire safety, and water safety).  Each child that participates will receive a medal.  The “Gear Up Games” will be taking place at the Box Elder Boys and Girls Club on May 7th and the Cache Valley Boys and Girls Club on May 21st.

During this fun week of events, the Bear River Health Department would also like to remind the community about House Bill 140, the Child Restraint Devices Amendment that Governor Hunstman signed into law on March 17, 2008.  This law will go into effect May 5, 2008.  The law requires the operator of a motor vehicle to provide protection of a person younger than eight years of age by using an appropriate child restraint device such as a car seat or a booster seat. Previously, the law only required a child under the age of 5 to use an approved child restraint device. The new law now protects children from five up to eight years of age through use of a booster seat or car seat. However, if a child is under eight but at least 57 inches tall, they are exempt from this law and may sit in a regular seat belt.

Parents can bring their car seats and booster seats to the Bear River Health Department to have them checked for proper use during the Car Seat Clinic Hours.  A Kids First class is also offered to anyone who would like to learn the proper instructions on how install a car seat or booster seat.

Car Seat Clinic Hours:
Logan:
Checks will take place on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 11:00 am to 12:20 pm. by appointment only.

Brigham City:
By appointment only

Kids First Class:
Offered in Logan Only:  Taught every other month on the last Wednesday of the month from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.  Cost is 35$.  A car seat will be provided with the class.  Anyone interested needs to register for the class.

Message From The Director

Welcome to our new web site. We hope you will visit this site often to find updates and information about current public health services and issues.

Every day, we strive to fulfill our public health mission. In recent years, however that has become a more challenging task. We are not only addressing the traditional, core public health activities such as restaurant inspections, immunization clinics, substance abuse treatment, infectious disease monitoring, and tobacco prevention education, but we are now constantly facing more daunting, high profile issues that require specialists from multiple disciplines and multiple divisions. This year for example those issues included air pollution, the spread of West Nile Virus, and an E. Coli outbreak.
